Lifetime Estrogen Exposure, Cumulative Lifetime Stress, and Cognition in Later Life

The main goal of this study was to begin to examine how stress and estrogen work together to influence memory and thinking in older women. We looked at how stressful experiences affected memory in older women and how the hormone estrogen influenced the relationship between stress and memory. The relationship between cognition, stress, and hormones was investigated by having 15 women aged 60 and older complete stress and hormone questionnaires and perform two memory tasks. Most likely due to the small sample size, we did not find the hypothesized combined effect of lifetime estrogen exposure and cumulative stress on cognition. Yet, this study showed a relationship between psychiatric wellbeing, estrogen, and stress exposure. Furthermore, participants’ cognitive assessment scores were correlated with estrogen exposure and age. The results suggest that estrogen and stress have individual effects on cognition

Informal Insurance and Moral Hazard: Gambling and Remittances in Thailand

More than 35% of Thai households either give or receive remittances, and remittances account for about one-third of the income of the receiving households. Remittances may be an important source of protection against adverse events for the receiving household. This paper provides evidence that remittances behave in a way that is consistent with insurance: they are sensitive to shocks to regional rainfall and they respond to household level events. The paper goes on to examine whether there is evidence of moral hazard in the informal insurance contracts that link households who send and receive remittances. Specifically, we examine how the quality of insurance that is offered through remittances affects the probability and the amount of gambling done by households that either send or receive remittances. The evidence is consistent with moral hazard: households who remit are more likely to gamble and gamble more the higher the potential quality of insurance between the sending and the receiving province. Alternatively, the results can be interpreted to indicate that households who are more insured shift their portfolios toward riskier investments.

High-end fashion manufacturing in the UK - product, process and vision: Recommendations for a Designer and Fashion Manufacturer Alliance and a Designer Innovation and Sampling Centre

The Centre for Fashion Enterprise (CFE) was commissioned by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to undertake a feasibility study to explore fully the market need for a new high-end production hub. This was in direct response to the need highlighted in the DCMS report, Creative Britain - New Talents For The New Economy, published in 2008. This study has confirmed that there is a need. However the need is for a sampling and innovation facility rather than a production hub. Designers reported a shortage of high quality sampling capacity in the UK, as well as difficulties in getting small quantities produced. Additionally, they do not know where or how to source appropriate manufacturing in the UK, Europe or globally, at the quality the market requires

This was in direct response to the need highlighted in the DCMS report, Creative Britain - New Talents For The New Economy, published in 2008. In addition to finding a need for a sampling and innovation facility1 (outlined in a separate document), the study identified significant problems relating to education and skills training in the sector. Recommendations are given in this report as to how these might be addressed, as well as a recommendation for an accreditation scheme that would aim to raise production quality standards within the sector

The Effect of Story Processing on Memory Performance

The purpose of the present study was to determine how recall performance following story processing compared to both survival processing and pleasantness processing. Participants were provided with a set of instructions depending on the condition they were in, narrative, survival, or pleasantness. Following this, participants rated the words one at a time, completed a brief distractor task, and then attempted to remember as many items as they could. The primary results demonstrated that narrative processing may provide a recall advantage similar to survival processing. These results suggest that similar underlying mechanisms may enhance recall in both sets of instructional conditions

The effects of maternal depression on speech to pre-school children: Implications for language development

We examined whether a past history of maternal depression affects the manner in which mothers speak to their children, and whether any differences relate to child language development. To do this, we measured acoustic, temporal and content-based speech/language characteristics of 40 pre-school-aged children and mothers with and without a history of depression. Results indicated that children of mothers with a past history of depression exhibited significantly lower vocabulary scores than children of mothers unaffected by depression. However, no maternal speech/language variables appeared to account for this difference. Maternal pitch variability and number of negative utterances both were found to correlate with child vocabulary scores; however, neither variable was found to relate to prior depression status. We discuss possible explanations for these findings and implications for child language development
